Ian Danver “Charlie! No!” Screamed a bandit as he rushed to him. Deciding not to be spectators any further Claire, Rio, Robert, and myself ran to the injured man for aid. Bordeaux meanwhile completely freaked out from the fire.
As we ran I took off a jacket and patted down the burning man as he fell and to the ground rolling in screaming pain.
“Roll! Roll! Roll!” I loudly ordered.
“Oh god! It’s burns! Ahh...” Charlie, the bandit screamed in a blood-curdling level of agony. With the flames to a smolder, Claire started pouring water on him, which helped even further.
“Who the hell are you?” Yelled one of the bandits.
“We we’re passing by and we wanted to help after what we saw.” said Robert.
“Get me some gauze and clean rags now!” Barking an order as Claire and I got the man laying upright on the ground against a pole.
“Here.” Robert alerted as he threw a bag with gauze. I caught it and opened the first packet.
“His cloak, get it off of him now. It’s still smoldering.”Telling Claire as I ripped off part of the injured man’s pant leg to easily get to one of the burns. “These burns are worst than I thought.”
Claire pulled what remained of the dark and severely-burned cloak to reveal a number of burns on his legs, left arm and torso. Blood was seeping out from the wounds with the vomit-inducing smell of burning flesh. I quick turned to look at Bordeaux to see if she was coming, but looked frightened like a cat and was scared stiff.
“Hold still.” I yelled at the man in agony. “ Quit moving or I can’t clean the wounds. Rio, hold him down for me.”
Rio then started holding to one side as Claire held to the other as I poured water on a large burn to clean it. Charlie, only responded with more screaming!
“Make it stop!” Cried Charlie.
“What do you think I’m doing?” I hastily remarked as I bandaged the leg up.
“It’s ok Charlie. I’m here for ya.” The other bandit comforted as he lightly grabbed his hand. “You’re fine, you’ll make it.” Turning to look at me to see if he was right, I merely glanced at him and continued on.
Charlie began to calm down as I finished up bandaging the wounds. The gauze was holding back dirt from the burns, but blood was easily absorbed by the gauze as it coagulated. The smell of burning flesh was now nasality entrenched in my nose.
“We’re clear, toss a flash!” Yelled one of the armed men yelled.
“Shit, cover your eyes now!” Rio shouted as he and everyone else shielded their eyes just before the flash-grenade blew.
“We’ve got to move him now!” I rapidly ordered as I carefully grabbed Charlie’s right leg while Rio, Robert, and Claire each grabbed another limb with varying levels of strength and pressure on the wounds as the assisting bandit had our cover with his gun readied. As we moved the injured man to cover, the other bandits rushed in yelling with crossbows, guns, and other weapons drawn forward. What they were shouting, I could care less about. My mind and senses were focused on Charlie and making sure he the bandages were on properly.
After I checked through the bandages, an unconscious woman was dragged out of the dilapidated liquor store. I briefly turned as Rio was making sure that Charlie was staying semi-alert before joining the others to see what was going on with the woman.
“You’re good.” Said the cloaked bandit kneeling down while looking at the bandages.
“It’s not the best. There is going to be a lot of scarring. But I don’t think he’ll die from an infection so long as the wounds stay covered and bandaged.” I described as I turned my head towards him.
“Charlie is a good man. He would be a goner by now if it weren’t for you guys.”
“Yep.” I nodded as I got up.
“What else do I need to do for him?” The guy asked me. Clearly, this person had next to no clue on how to treat the burns.
“Keep them bandaged and don’t let dirt in them. Periodically check the wounds and pat them with warm water and a clean rag.”
The now exhausted bandit turned and sighed, “Thank you.” he said with an honest tone and expression staring at me.
I shook his hand and mentioned that I was not the only one that helped. The others meanwhile asked if they could get a look inside, but from what I saw there was no chance of that happening. Taking the bag which held a few remaining packets of gauze, I walked back towards Claire, Robert, and Rio as Charlie was carefully picked up by his fellow men. That smell of burning flesh though did not leave my nose until the evening, but the memories of that event would stay with me longer than the scars on Charlie’s limbs and torso.
